You will be glad to know the education your chiropractor received was very extensive and demanding. The average medical doctor will attend approximately 4,250 hours of education depending on specialty and the average doctor of chiropractic has attended 4,485 hours of education. Chiropractic students undergo thorough teachings in the structure and function of the human body, how disease occurs, and how to prevent, correct and maintain proper health. Initially, chiropractors must complete a 4 year undergraduate degree in basic science. Emphasis is placed on the core sciences, including organic chemistry, general chemistry, physics, biology, and psychology. Once undergraduate requirements have been met, a rigorous 4-5 year chiropractic program begins, which is very similar to that of medical school. Course requirements include gross anatomy, physiology, pathology, neurology, radiology, biomechanics, spinal and extremity adjusting techniques, along with a variety of other health sensitive subjects. Council on Chiropractic Education (CCE) defines the role of a doctor of chiropractic and his/her professional education as follows:

“A Doctor of Chiropractic is a physician whose purpose is to help meet the health needs of the public as a member of the healing arts. He/she gives particular attention to the relationship of the structural and neurological aspects of the body and is educated in the basic and clinical sciences as well as in related health subjects. Chiropractic science concerns itself with the relationship between structure (primarily the spine), and function (primarily coordinated by the nervous system), of the human body as that relationship may affect the restoration and preservation of health.”

“The purpose of his/her professional education is to prepare the doctor of chiropractic as a primary health care provider; to provide the students with a base of knowledge sufficient for the performance of his or her professional obligations as a doctor of chiropractic. As a portal of entry to the health delivery system, the doctor of chiropractic must be well educated to diagnose for chiropractic care, to provide chiropractic care, and to consult with, or refer to, other health care providers as indicated.”

After graduation, four national board exams must have been passed, and depending on the individual state, a state board exam may have been given. Once these tasks have been met, a license to practice chiropractic may be granted. California requires 40 hours of continuing education every two years to maintain licensure however our doctors routinely exceed the mandatory CE requirements to ensure knowledge of latest techniques.
